Buying a car the smart way?

A survey from AA Insurance last year put paid to the myth than men are better drivers than women.

Despite ongoing jokes about ‘women drivers’ – most not funny - the survey showed men are more inclined to speed, be aggressive, fall asleep at the wheel and be impatient while driving.

No surprises there, then!

While the survey was reassuring (and probably not surprising to at least half of the population) it’s a fact that plenty of women are more daunted by actually buying a car than by driving one.

Which is a shame, because now’s a great time to be buying a vehicle – the best it has been in a while. Car dealers are struggling through some of their toughest times ever - meaning car buyers can snap up bargains in nearly all price ranges.

If you’re keen on buying a vehicle, but not keen on braving the car yards or picking your way through Trade Me or the For Sale ads, there’s another way.

WomenOnWheels (www.womenonwheels.co.nz) claim using their service is the way “smart women buy their cars”. They may be right.

Basically, you and their consultants work out what you want in a car (yes, you can specify colour) and they’ll search it out for you through their trade contacts and then deliver it to you door, ready for a test drive.

If you don’t like it, no problem – they’ll just keep looking until they find it.

And when WomenOnWheels do find the car of your dreams and you decide to buy it, it will be delivered to a location of your choice having been professionally valeted, mechanically inspected, insured (having sourced low ‘women driver’ rates) and with a warranty.

Perhaps the only group of people more maligned than female drivers are male car salesmen – those guys who, along with politicians, consistently feature in the list of New Zealand’s least most trusted professions.

Here’s a way women driver can flex their buying muscle without having to even enter a car yard.

Ignore those lame, female driver jokes. Women may be having the last laugh after all.
